Summary

The paper attempts to identify the possible use of pMDI to produce wood-based materials. Its purpose was to investigate the possibility of improving the property or reduce the cost of production of composite wood products made using pMDI through the modification of the selected components, or by its use as a modifier, commonly used in the wood-based industry condensing resins.
Research on the possible range of uses pMDI for the manufacture wood material was carried out in different directions. The first one involved the use of cost reduction through partial substitution of cheaper compounds. Second, using the excellent properties of isocyanates on the possible use as a modifier of the amino and phenolic resins in order to improve the properties, in particular water resistance, manufactured with its use  of boards for both of wood and non-wood lignocellulose raw materials. The third focused on its possible uses in the plywood manufacture, due to its inconvenience has not been applied so far. While the fourth trend is an attempt to  demonstrate that, despite the high price, it can be used in the production of new types of wood-based materials, that require best properties adhesives.
The carried out research has shown that partial substitution pMDI of polyethylene glycols or ethyl acetoacetate can produce particleboard with good physical and mechanical properties, while reducing the cost of the adhesive mixture. High efficiency pMDI in increasing amino resins water resistance allows for using such hybrid resins (UF/pMDI and MUPF/pMDI) wood-based panels production characterised by strength after accelerated aging tests at value set appropriate standards for materials intended for use in humid conditions. Due to a high reactivity it is possible to use pMDI as a PF resin modifier and manufacture using such hybrid board with rape straw chips of high water resistance. The use of glycerol as a cross-linking agent increases the viscosity of the pMDI to a degree that allows its use for the manufacture of plywood with good mechanical properties and bond quality appropriate for use outside the plywood without roofing, even in the shorter pressing times. The study revealed a particularly useful pMDI to produce wood-based materials at great utility values and new application areas (lightweight of wood and rape straw boards subjected to surface overlaying processes with decorative veneer).
